"Heritage Hall: Golden Era of Development 1850-1930"
Location: Grout Museum of History and Science, 503 South Street
Heritage Hall, formerly known as Photo History Hall, has expanded to include the years 1840-1930. This exhibit looks at Waterloo through photographs and selected artifacts from the Grout Museum District collection. This time-line exhibits focus is on migrants and immigrants who came to the area looking for the American Dream. They fashioned a home, made a living, raised their families, and helped create the town of Waterloo.
Story lines include the first settlers, platting the town, the arrival of early migrants and immigrants like Birdie Williams and Maren Oleson. Early entrepreneurs like William Welty owner of the Welty Pen Company, and Croatian immigrant Nicholas Sulentic who started Waterloo Industries are also included.
Look for more changes in the future as plans are underway to include Heritage Hall storylines through 2000.
