"Henry's Golden Dream: A Home For His Collection"
Location: Grout Museum of History and Science, 503 South Street
In honor of the Grout Museums Golden 50th Year, the Inquiring Minds* chose collector and philanthropist Henry Grout as their topic. This exhibit tells the story of the museums namesake and how he spent his lifetime accumulating artifacts that were of an historical and anthropological nature. His ultimate dream was to share his collection with the community where hed made his life-long home. He left his collection and a trust to eventually build a museum so the story of Waterloo and the Cedar Valley could be told.
Included in the exhibit are photographs and a few chosen artifacts from Henrys original collection. These artifacts include rocks, minerals, fossils, Native American artifacts, Pioneer artifacts, coins, books, and souvenirs collected during Henrys worldly travels. This exhibit is in conjunction with the exhibit Henry Had a Hobby, which is on exhibit July 7, 2006 April 2007 and relates to the Grout Museum Districts Golden Anniversary.
*Inquiring Minds: The Kittrell Network was formed in January 2006 in order to create a new youth volunteer exhibit in the Grout Museum District. This group consists of fourth and fifth grade students enrolled in the Expanded Learning Program (EPL) at Kittrell School in Waterloo. A senior from East High School, is assisting with the project.
With supervision, the students completed their own research, choose the artifacts and photographs, wrote the text, and designed and installed the exhibit. Museum staff was instrumental in guiding the process along with volunteer Jerry Kramer and the students teacher Carol Boyce.
