The library contains an archival collection numbering 21,617 maps, photographs, oral histories, audio/video tapes, clippings and documents relating to the Cedar Valley. In addition, 1,075 genealogical reference books and 520 rare books are housed here. The library contains cemetery listings, probate records, naturalization, early marriages, death listings, city directories, county history books for Black Hawk County as well as other counties in the vicinity. In addition, there are Cedar Tree Publications, the 1860 Iowa Federal Census index, some census and immigration information as well as other genealogical publications from other counties and states. In the archival collection is a significant set of 350 architectural renderings of homes, schools and businesses, reflecting the career of a prominent early 20th century local architect. The library is available for use during regular hours and regular admission fees are applicable (members of Northeast Iowa Genealogical Society are admitted free). Archivist available for research assistance only on Tuesday – Thursday. A photocopier is available for use at 20 cents a sheet. There is a card file for the contents of the library.

The Northeast Iowa Genealogical Society was organized in 1970 to create and foster an interest in genealogy, to preserve genealogical and historical data, particularly of the ancestors and pioneers of Black Hawk County, Iowa, and to instruct and educate persons interested in genealogy. Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month except July, August and December at the Grout Museum of History & Science.
