"Create Your Own Diver"

What You'll Need:

• Squeeze condiment packet (ketchup, mustard, taco sauce, etc.)

• 2-liter bottle with lid

• H2O (water)

What to Do:

1. First, determine if your condiment packet will work by dropping it into a glass of H2O. Those that work best barely float.

2. Next, fill the bottle to the top with H2O. Then push in the condiment packet, (some H2O will come out, so do this in the sink), screw on the lid, and you're done!

What's Happening?

• When you squeeze the bottle, the packet/diver will sink. Let go and it rises to the top!

• It's the air bubble in the packet that determines whether it sinks or floats. Squeezing the bottle makes the bubble shrink, being less buoyant causes the packet to sink.

This experiment demonstrates the property of buoyancy. Buoyancy is the amount of H2O an object displaces, or pushes aside. If the weight of H2O displaced exceeds the weight of the object, it will float.
