From the late 1990s through the early 2000s Black Hawk County experienced a dramatic cultural change as Bosnian refugees relocated to the area. In collaboration with the Bosnian-American Leadership Network of the Cedar Valley and the UNI Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education, the Grout Museum of History and Science is presenting an exhibition about the journey from the aftermath of a brutal civil war to the heartland of America. Through the use of interviews visitors learn about the experiences of the refugees as they arrived in the Cedar Valley. Examine how these difficult events are remembered and are passed on to a new generation of Bosnians who have little memory of the violence of civil war. Demonstrating the impact of the conflict and the resulting relocation, this exhibit explores how the process of assimilation affected both the refugees and the people of the Cedar Valley.
